AQUAshuttle on display at the new Sant Ocean Hall at
the Smithsonian’s National
Museum of Natural History The
Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have teamed up to create
an exhibit devoted exclusively to a global view of the ocean.
This exhibit is housed in the breathtaking new Sant Ocean Hall at
the Smithsonian’s National Museum, Washington. A
one-of-a-kind interpretive exhibit, the Sant Ocean Hall presents the
global ocean from a cross-disciplinary perspective, highlighting the
biological, geological, and anthropological expertise and unparalleled
scientific collections of the Museum, as well as ongoing research in
marine science. Chelsea Technologies Group is pleased to be associated with the exhibit and the AQUAshuttle towed undulating vehicle illustrates the ability to collect a wide range of oceanographic data in support of ocean colour studies. The AQUAshuttle is a key instrument in undertaking mesoscale surveys from a wide range or research vessels and ships of opportunity. It has long been recognised that such tools can provide very extensive datasets over large areas at significantly reduced costs. Chelsea has led the way in the design of undulating towed platforms and to date over 150 vehicles have gathered millions of miles of ocean data. Over 60 of the world’s research institutes have turned to Chelsea to provide towed vehicle solutions. Typical sensor payloads measure temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, pH and automated plankton sampling. |
